Contemporary office washrooms at Harella House, Clerkenwell
The new washrooms we’ve recently completed for this refurbished London office draw on a range of high-tech man-made materials including lightweight cast concrete to create a unique, contemporary space which hints at the industrial history of the building.
Harella House, a 1930s warehouse building just off Clerkenwell Road in London, has been sensitively refurbished by BW: Workplace Experts, remodelling the interior layout and creating six floors of Cat A office space plus three new terraced areas. The refurbishment was intended to highlight the character of the building while bringing the facilities completely up to date to create a light and airy workspace which is both modern and characterful.
We worked with BW to deliver the new washroom areas on all levels of the building – collaborating with the design team to create a contemporary space with an industrial feel to match the building’s warehouse style, making material choice an essential aspect of this project.
Ensuring that the washroom areas were easy to keep hygienically clean was a key consideration. Materials such as FENIX NTM laminate, with its in-built antibacterial properties, offered an ideal solution for the toilet cubicles. FENIX is manufactured in Italy by Arpa Industriale using the latest nano-technology to create a highly durable, tough acrylic resin surface with a host of high-performance properties including thermal self-healing, hydro repellence, scratch resistance and anti-fingerprint. And from a design perspective it also offers very low light reflectivity, creating an extremely opaque super matt surface which is also soft to the touch.
Our range of full height Alto FENIX toilet cubicles were specified in a crisp white colour to contrast with the grey and stone coloured concrete vanities. As well as floor to ceiling doors and partitions which provide end-users with complete privacy, our Alto FENIX toilet cubicles are also designed with a rebated flush system for a virtually seamless façade, keeping the space clean and elegant.
The bespoke concrete trough-style vanities were manufactured by CementoUK using specialist ultra high performance concrete (UHPC). With the appeal and look of traditional concrete, UHPC is also lightweight, extremely hard-wearing and non-porous – making it a practical choice that will withstand the rigours of daily use in an office environment.
Our team worked with CementoUK to create and install the supporting framework to perfectly accommodate the concrete trough vanities. The team also designed and installed the bespoke mirrors on a matching white framework above each vanity as well as our Concerto integrated duct panels in white laminate underneath the vanities and behind the WCs. The duct panelling system provides an easy-to-clean surface which is easy-to-access for any future maintenance required and also hides any unsightly pipework, giving the new washrooms a completely clean and minimalistic finish.
