Washrooms and bespoke dressing room joinery at Dominion Theatre, London
We designed and installed theatrical-inspired washrooms and backstage dressing rooms for an iconic West End theatre, using brass effect laminate and marble-like solid surfacing materials to create the sumptuous design.
The Grade II listed Dominion Theatre is one of the largest theatres in London’s West End, with its 2,000-seater auditorium. Like the nearby Apollo Victoria, it started life in the late 1920s as a cinema before becoming a theatre venue years later. Ben Elton’s musical ‘We Will Rock You’, based on the music of rock band Queen, ran for 12 years from 2002 – making it the longest-running show ever to be hosted continually at the theatre.
As part of the theatre’s recent refurbishment, we installed new washrooms and bespoke dressing room joinery for the backstage areas, both of which were designed to mirror the theatre’s stunning Art Deco style auditorium, with its luxurious red and gold colour scheme.
The new washrooms feature our popular Alto full height toilet cubicles finished with a unique high-sheen brass effect laminate. Both the doors and pilasters were finished in the same brass laminate, which together with the cubicles’ flush front door design, creates a stylish and seamless finish.
We also installed our bespoke Concerto integrated duct panel system behind each WC, finished in black laminate to contrast with the brass laminate toilet cubicles. As well as being easy-to-clean, the system provides an effective way to conceal unsightly pipework and allows access for future maintenance, whether planned or reactive.
Completing the washroom areas are the Corian® solid surface vanity units, which were specified in a light grey marble-effect to complement the brass effect toilet cubicles. The vanities were manufactured to a bespoke design and feature individual square counter-top ceramic sinks together with red splashbacks and brass taps to match the cubicles and hexagonal mirrors above. Specifying man-made solid surface materials rather than natural stone meant the surface could be cut to any shape and joined seamlessly, creating a hygienic surface that’s easy to clean and maintain.
In the dressing room areas, we installed dressing tables with individual mirror displays including traditional lightbulb surrounds for maximum light and black high pressure laminate dividers separating the dressing tables into individual spaces. The tables were manufactured from Corian® solid surface in the same marble-effect finish as the washroom vanity units and were completed using brass legs – tying both areas of the theatre together effortlessly to create a cohesive overall design.
